Tested & Recommended
Each horse is evaluated both in free jumping and under saddle. I only present horses that impress me in both quality and character.
Key Quality Traits of a Show Jumper
A top-class show jumping horse combines athletic ability with intelligence and rideability. These traits determine success over fences:
Scope & Carefulness
Scope describes the ability to safely clear even large obstacles. Carefulness — the natural tendency to avoid touching the rails — is just as important. The ideal show jumper combines both: jumping with power and respect.
Canter Quality & Agility
A good, balanced canter with a natural uphill tendency is the foundation for successful jumping. Added to this is agility: quick, clean turns and the ability to handle short distances are crucial in the course.
Technique & Bascule
Good technique over the jump — known as bascule — is reflected in a rounded, athletic jumping effort. Correct front leg technique and an active hind end are key traits I pay close attention to.
Bravery & Attitude
Show jumping horses must be brave without becoming hectic. The willingness to go to the fence, commit to distances, and maintain confidence even after a mistake — this is what separates good horses from great ones.

Tips for Buying a Show Jumping Horse
Check Pedigree and Bloodlines
The pedigree provides valuable insight into talent, scope, and willingness to perform. Renowned bloodlines such as Contendro, Cornet Obolensky, or Cassini have proven themselves repeatedly in show jumping. However, pedigree alone is not enough — the individual horse is what truly matters.
Observe Free Jumping
Free jumping reveals a horse’s natural jumping ability without rider influence. Pay attention to the bascule, front leg technique, and take-off. How does the horse approach the jump? Does it jump with respect or flat? Does it adjust distances on its own? These observations are extremely valuable.
Evaluate Competition Experience
Check competition results on platforms like FN-Online or Equi-Score. Don’t just focus on placings — also consider faults, penalties, and consistency of starts. Observe how the horse performs on different courses and distances — this provides valuable insight into its potential and reliability.
FAQ on Buying a Show Jumping Horse
01Which show jumping horse suits me as a beginner?
For getting started in show jumping, I recommend an experienced horse aged 9–15 that confidently and consistently jumps courses up to 1.10 m. A “schoolmaster” will give you confidence over fences and forgive rider mistakes. Character and reliability are more important than maximum scope.
02How do I recognize a good show jumping horse?
Look for a round jumping effort (bascule), correct front leg technique, an active hind end, and natural carefulness. In the canter, the horse should be balanced, responsive, and adjustable. The willingness to go to the fence and the ability to find distances independently are key quality indicators.
03How important is pedigree in show jumping horses?
Pedigree is an important indicator of scope and jumping talent. Proven sires such as Cornet Obolensky, Casall, Diamant de Semilly, or Chacco-Blue are known for reliable jumping quality. However, individual assessment over fences is more important than any pedigree.
04Do you also source show jumping horses from the Netherlands?
Yes, the Netherlands is known for its top-quality show jumping horses. Through my connections with KWPN breeders, I regularly have access to talented and proven horses. I also organize transport and handle all formalities for you.
05How do I test jumping ability during a trial ride?
Start with small jumps and gradually increase the height. Pay attention to how the horse reacts to different distances. Does it jump safely even from difficult situations? How does it behave with new, colorful fences? Ideally, you should also see the horse free jumping.
06What is important after buying a show jumping horse?
Give the horse time to settle in — at least 2–4 weeks without competition stress. Start training gradually and increase demands step by step. Arrange an initial check with the farrier and veterinarian promptly. I will support and advise you throughout this phase.
